Alocasia cucullata

The Alocasia cucullata does not like to be overwatered and so it is best to let the first 3cm of soil dry out before re-watering.  In the cooler months when the plant goes into dormancy you will need to water less. The plant also likes medium humidity of around 60% and so in the drier months keep a tray of water nearby to assist with the humidity levels.

The plants benefit from regular fortnightly fertilising in summer and spring with a liquid fertiliser. To avoid root burn, ensure your soil is moist before fertilising. It is best to reduce your rate of fertiliser when the plant is dormant during the winter months. 

Alocasia cucullata grow best near a window with bright indirect light. By exposing your plant to direct sunlight this will likely result in burnt leaves conversely too much shade may result in root rot or soil mould which may lead to further problems. 

The plant is susceptible to crown rot which is spread by a soil borne fungus which may occur if the soil is too wet and is not allowed to dry out between watering. Common pests include mealybugs, aphids, scale and spider mites. It pays to inspect the plant regularly. 

The leaves benefit from periodic cleaning with lukewarm water which is preferable to leaf shine products.
